Why do so many Americans distrust what they read in their newspapers? The American Society of Newspaper Editors is trying to answer this painful question. The organization is deep into a long selfanalysis known as the journalism credibility project.
Sad to say, this project has turned out to be mostly lowlevel findings about factual errors and spelling and grammar mistakes, combined with lots of headscratching puzzlement about what in the world those readers really want.
But the sources of distrust go way deeper. Most journalists learn to see the world through a set of standard templates (patterns) into which they plug each day’s events. In other words, there is a conventional story line in the newsroom culture that provides a backbone and a readymade narrative structure for otherwise confusing news.
There exists a social and cultural disconnect between journalists and their readers, which helps explain why the “standard templates” of the newsroom seem alien to many readers. In a recent survey, questionnaires were sent to reporters in five middlesize cities around the country, plus one large metropolitan area. Then residents in these communities were phoned at random and asked the same questions.
Replies show that compared with other Americans, journalists are more likely to live in upscale neighborhoods, have maids, own Mercedeses, and trade stocks, and they’re less likely to go to church,do volunteer work,or put down roots in a community.
Reporters tend to be part of a broadly defined social and cultural elite,so their work tends to reflect the conventional values of this elite. The astonishing distrust of the news media isn’t rooted in inaccuracy or poor reportorial skills but in the daily clash of world views between reporters and their readers.
This is an explosive situation for any industry, particularly a declining one. Here is a troubled business that keeps hiring employees whose attitudes vastly annoy the customers. Then it sponsors lots of symposiums and a credibility project dedicated to wondering why customers are annoyed and fleeing in large numbers. But it never seems to get around to noticing the cultural and class biases that so many former buyers are complaining about. If it did,it would open up its diversity program, now focused narrowly on race and gender, and look for reporters who differ broadly by outlook, values, education, and class.
59.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Needs of the readers all over the world.
B.Causes of the public disappointment about newspapers.
C.Origins of the declining newspaper industry.
D.Aims of a journalism credibility project.
60.The results of the journalism credibility project turned out to be.
A.quite trustworthy B.somewhat contradictory
C.very illuminating D.rather superficial
61.The basic problem of journalists as pointed out by the writer lies in their.
A.working attitude B.conventional lifestyle
C.world outlook D.educational background
62.Despite its efforts, the newspaper industry still cannot satisfy the readers owing to its.
A.failure to realize its real problem
B.tendency to hire annoying reporters
C.likeliness to do inaccurate reporting
D.prejudice in matters of race and gender
Scattered around the globe are more than 100 small regions of isolated volcanic activity known to geologists as hot spots. Unlike most of the world’s volcanoes, they are not always found at the boundaries of the great drifting plates that make up the earth’s surface;on the contrary, many of them lie deep in the interior of a plate. Most of the hot spots move only slowly, and in some cases the movement of the plates past them has left trails of dead volcanoes. The hot spots and their volcanic trails are milestones that mark the passage of the plates.
That the plates are moving is now beyond dispute. Africa and South America, for example, are moving away from each other as new material is injected into the sea floor between them. The complementary coastlines and certain geological features that seem to span the ocean are reminders of where the two continents were once joined. The relative motion of the plates carrying these continents has been constructed in detail, but the motion of one plate with respect to another cannot readily be translated into motion with respect to the earth’s interior. It is not possible to determine whether both continents are moving in opposite directions or whether one continent is stationary and the other is drifting away from it. Hot spots, anchored in the deeper layers of the earth, provide the measuring instruments needed to resolve the question. From an analysis of the hotspot population it appears that the African plate is stationary and that it has not moved during the past 30 million years.
The significance of hot spots is not confined to their role as a frame of reference. It now appears that they also have an important influence on the geophysical processes that propel the plates across the globe. When a continental plate comes to rest over a hot spot, the material rising from deeper layers creates a broad dome.As the dome grows,it develops deep fissures (cracks);in at least a few cases the continent may break entirely along some of these fissures,so that the hot spot initiates the formation of a new ocean. Thus just as earlier theories have explained the mobility of the continents,so hot spots may explain their mutability (inconstancy).
67.The author believes that .
A.the motion of the plates corresponds to that of the earth’s interior
B.the geological theory about drifting plates has been proved to be true
C.the hot spots and the plates move slowly in opposite directions
D.the movement of hot spots proves the continents are moving apart
68.That Africa and South America were once joined can be deduced from the fact that .
A.the two continents are still moving in opposite directions
B.they have been found to share certain geological features
C.the African plate has been stable for 30 million years
D.over 100 hot spots are scattered all around the globe
69.The hotspot theory may prove useful in explaining .
A.the structure of the African plates
B.the revival of dead volcanoes
C.the mobility of the continents
D.the formation of new oceans
70.The passage is mainly about .
A.the features of volcanic activities
B.the importance of the theory about drifting plates
C.the significance of hot spots in geophysical studies
D.the process of the formation of volcanoes
要注意的是在此段最后一句话中:Just as… as…
The American economic system is organized around a basically privateenterprise, marketoriented economy in which consumers largely determine what shall be produced by spending their money in the marketplace for those goods and services that they want most.Private businessmen, striving to make profits, produce these goods and services in competition with other businessmen;and the profit motive, operating under competitive pressures, largely determines how these goods and services are produced. Thus,in the American economic system it is the demand of individual consumers, coupled with the desire of businessmen to maximize profits and the desire of individuals to maximize their incomes, that together determine what shall be produced and how resources are used to produce it.
An important factor in a marketoriented economy is the mechanism by which consumer demands can be expressed and responded to by producers. In the American economy, this mechanism is provided by a price system,a process in which prices rise and fall in response to relative demands of consumers and supplies offered by sellerproducers. If the product is in short supply relative to the demand, the price will be bid up and some consumers will be eliminated from the market. If,on the other hand, producing more of a commodity results in reducing its cost, this will tend to increase the supply offered by sellerproducers, which in turn will lower the price and permit more consumers to buy the product. Thus, price is the regulating mechanism in the American economic system.
The important factor in a privateenterprise economy is that individuals are allowed to own productive resources (private property ),and they are permitted to hire labor, gain control over natural resources, and produce goods and services for sale at a profit. In the American economy, the concept of private property embraces not only the ownership of productive resources but also certain rights, including the right to determine the price of a product or to make a free contract with another private individual.
51.In Line 6,Para.1,“the desire of individuals to maximize their incomes”means .
A.Americans are never satisfied with their incomes
B.Americans tend to overstate their incomes
C.Americans want to have their incomes increased
D.Americans want to increase the purchasing power of their incomes
52. The first two sentences in the second paragraph tell us that.
A.producers can satisfy the consumers by mechanized production
B.consumers can express their demands through producers
C.producers decide the prices of products
D.supply and demand regulate prices
53.According to the passage,a private-enterprise economy is characterized by .
A.private property and rights concerned
B.manpower and natural resources control
C.ownership of productive resources
D.free contracts and prices
54.The passage is mainly about.
A.how American goods are produced
B.how American consumers buy their goods
C.how American economic system works
D.how American businessmen make their profits
the desire of individuals to maximize their incomes 与 the desire of businessmen to maximize profits对比,商人是为了最大程度地获取利润,而普通个人是为了充分利用他们固定的收入去购买商品,因此符合这一含义的解释是D。A、B两项内容与引号内部分的内容无关,C中提到的have their incomes increased不是原文所要表达的含义,因为这不是the American economic system的决定因素。
The American economic system is organized around a basically...。
No company likes to be told it is contributing to the moral decline of a nation.“Is this what you intended to accomplish with your careers?” Senator Robert Dole asked Time Warner executives last week.“You have sold your souls, but must you corrupt our nation and threaten our children as well?” At Time Warner, however, such questions are simply the latest manifestation of the soulsearching that has involved the company ever since the company was born in 1990.It’s a selfexamination that has,at various times, involved issues of responsibility, creative freedom and the corporate bottom line.
At the core of this debate is chairman Gerald Levin,56,who took over for the late Steve Ross in 1992.On the financial front,Levin is under pressure to raise the stock price and reduce the company’s mountainous debt, which will increase to $17.3 billion after two new cable deals close. He has promised to see off some of the property and restructure the company, but investors are waiting impatiently.
The flap over rap is not making life any easier for him.Levin has consistently defended the company’s rap music on the grounds of expression. In 1992,when Time Warner was under fire for releasing IceT’s violent rap song Cop Killer,Levin described rap as a lawful expression of street culture, which deserves an outlet.“The test of any democratic society,”he wrote in a Wall Street Journal column,“lies not in how well it can control expression but in whether it gives freedom of thought and expression the widest possible latitude, however disputable or irritating the results may sometimes be.We won’t retreat in the face of any threats.”
Levin would not comment on the debate last week, but there were signs that the chairman was backing off his hardline stand,at least to some extent.During the discussion of rock singing verses at last month’s stockholders’ meeting,Levin asserted that “music is not the cause of society’s ills” and even cited his son,a teacher in the Bronx,New York, who uses rap to communicate with students. But he talked as well about the “balanced struggle” between creative freedom and social responsibility, and he announced that the company would launch a drive to develop standards for distribution and labeling of potentially objectionable music.
The 15member Time Warner board is generally supportive of Levin and his corporate strategy. But insiders say several of them have shown their concerns in this matter.“Some of us have known for many, many years that the freedoms under the First Amendment are not totally unlimited,” says Luce.“I think it is perhaps the case that some people associated with the company have only recently come to realize this.”
63.Senator Robert Dole criticized Time Warner for.
A.its raising of the corporate stock price
B.its selfexamination of soul
C.its neglect of social responsibility
D.its emphasis on creative freedom
64.According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?
A.Luce is a spokesman of Time Warner.
B.Gerald Levin is liable to compromise.
C.Time Warner is united as one in the face of the debate.
D.Steve Ross is no longer alive
65.In face of the recent attacks on the company, the chairman.
A.stuck to a strong stand to defend freedom of expression
B.softened his tone and adopted some new policy
C.changed his attitude and yielded to objection
D.received more support from the 15member board
66.The best title for this passage might be.
A.A Company under Fire
B.A Debate on Moral Decline
C.A Lawful Outlet of Street Culture
D.A Form of Creative Freedom
D.Steve Ross is no longer alive。
所以A(遭到非难的公司)最为合适。
