1.kiss of death
kiss和death联系在一起？是的，这个词来自宗教，是犹大背叛耶稣是给他的一吻。它现在指造成失败的因素，something ultimately causing ruin.
--Once the media dig the shady bussiness, it would be the kiss of death for our whole list of candidate for the city council.
2.maverick
这个词来自一个叫maverick的美国人，十九世纪美国的农场主都给自己的牛用烙铁烙上记号，用以区别。唯独这位Maverick先生，他从不给自己的牛做标记。这样一来，也倒成了一种标记。(没记号的牛岂不都成了他的？)现在，maverick用来形容不跟从众人意见的人，或在党派中不遵从党派一致意见的人。(老俞的红宝书里的解释是特立独行的人，很贴切。)
3.throw to the wolves
扔进狼群，真够狠的。看下面的句子里的人，更狠！
--Louie, we've got to find some small-time guys to throw to the wolves for murdering that cop. Otherwise, the cops will trace the killing right back to us.
这个词是说把别人至于险境，来解救自己。
4.fifth wheel
通常车子只有四个轮子，第五个轮子是什么？当然是备用轮胎了。fifth wheel指那种多余的人。
--If you sit down at the table, they don't even say hello,they make you feel like a fifth wheel.
5.all thumbs
人的大拇指由于骨骼结构的原因特别有力，那么一只手的五个手指全都是大拇指呢。恐怕你会别扭的要死，什么也干不了(而且多难看呀)。
all thumbs 用来形容手脚很笨拙的人。extremely awkward or clumsy.
